Tips to put video’s on your website

If you want to embed a video on your website, you need to have a good understanding of the basic types of video files. What kind of video file to use? What are the pros and cons of each file type? These are just some of the questions to ask yourself before proceeding with the implementation of the video on your web pages.

There are three basic types of Internet video files. Mpeg, AVI and QuickTime. I think the QuickTime file type is the most popular, as many of the major news and entertainment sites use it exclusively on their web pages.

AVI is the oldest of the three main file types. It’s a Windows-oriented video format, but it’s not the most popular due to audio and video compatibility and synchronization issues. Since the QuickTime format can be used on a Windows or Macintosh computer, the AVI video file type is losing popularity every day.

The mpeg format is a popular video file type that uses its high output quality to increase its popularity over the QuickTime format. Mpeg is used in video games, CD-ROMs and other media that require high quality output. A disadvantage of mpeg is that it sacrifices file size for digital quality. MPEG video files are usually large in size.

Another disadvantage of the mpeg format is that it really takes time and sophisticated hardware and software to convert a simple video to mpeg. And let’s not forget that the mpeg format is not supported by apple and Macintosh, which means that if you put an mpeg video on your website, it will not be visible to Macintosh users.

QuickTime is by far the most popular video file type developed by Apple for Macintosh users, but it is also compatible with IBM compatible machines and Windows operating systems. The hardware and software needed to digitize videos in QuickTime format are very cheap compared to the mpeg format. So it’s much easier and cheaper to create videos and put them on your website using the QuickTime format.
